Mental Skill Training

The Business Times Article by Justine Moss

Singaporean John Wee is one of 25 worldwide certified Golfpsych Instructors, a programme developed by Dr Deborah Graham and Jon Stabler. (www.golfpsych.com) which has been tried out by a number of pro golfers, including Fred Couples, Mark O Meara and Tom Kites. (All Major Winners)

Karl Pope

Karl Pope, the Singapore based engineering manager for an investment bank, who's game stalled 2 years ago, initially approached Wee for instruction, but was impressed with the creative approach to ironing out kinks in set up and rhythm, embarked on golf psychology sessions.

"I quickly learnt that belting the ball straight is not the main part of the game, its the mindset," observed Pope.

The departure from traditional golf coaching, he says, came when Wee tackled small but important fundamenals rather than dish out a things to remember list. The biggest gains for him have come from doing simple things right, such as accurate pitching and running to create one easy putt.

"It made a massive difference," says Pope. How big? "Significant enough to slice eight shots off his 28 handicap".

Kerry and Marg Eames

Our session with John involved breathing, relaxation and mental visualization techniques that we have been able to put into good practice to improve our golf and lawn bowls game. We were amazed at how 3 simple components could play a key role in not just improving one's game dramatically but also our general physical and mental well being.
